#4 Courage

One of God’s promises is to be our strength when we are weak. Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of the, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you.” Deuteronomy 30:5

How do we take advantage of this promise? Answer: Prayer. “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6

The power of prayer is undeniable. People may tell you different but the only reason one might think their prayers don’t get answered, though they pray with faith, is because their prayer wasn’t answered in the manner they were praying for. They couldn’t see the answer. As in, we didn’t get the outcome we thought was best or wanted. And that can be hard to accept. Our plan does not always align with God’s plan. But keep in mind our plan is from our limited and self centered viewpoint. God’s plan comes from his omniscient power.

Prayer also does not need to be long and eloquent or well spoken. God actually prefers off the cuff, spontaneous, continuous prayer. “pray without ceasing,” 1 Thessalonians 5:17. In order to be continuous he basically is telling us to talk with him all throughout the day. And the only way to accomplish that is to talk to him like we talk to ourself throughout the day. Turn our thoughts from ourselves, toward him…and talk like he is your best friend. That’s prayer. There is no special posture to take or requirement to have your eyes closed and hands clasped, or be on your knees. Just pray.

If you are unsure how to begin and want an example, Jesus gave us that too. Begin by saying this prayer. “Pray then like this:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed by your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts , as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” Matthew 6:9-13

Be strong and courageous today. Pray that God gives you the strength. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
